Cities in Hidalgo County began collecting Christmas trees for recycling this week.

McAllen and Mission are among cities in the county recycling trees for mulch. The city of McAllen will sell the Christmas tree mulch for $2.25 a bag beginning in March. Funds collected from mulch sales will be placed in the city’s sanitation fund.

“Start the year off by doing something good for the environment,” said Robert Treviño, McAllen’s renewable resources manager.

During the last holiday season, the city collected more than 2,000 trees through its recycling program.

“Take care of the environment for the future of our children,” Treviño said, adding the city of McAllen recycles all brush it collects.

McAllen residents who pay a brush fee may also place trees in a pile outside their homes. The city of McAllen recycles brush year-round.

People living outside the city of McAllen may also drop off trees at its recycling center located at 4101 N. Bentsen Road.

Ornaments and other items must be removed from trees prior to recycling.
