Cleanup at the Former Viva Recycling Facility is expected to be complete by early April 2019.
Liberty Tire Recycling has cleared more than 10,500 tons of tires from the facility. Each truckload averages about 14 tons. Tire removal at the site is nearly 100% complete. Crews will continue to cleanup of tire shreds and chips on site. That work is expected to last no more than six weeks.
Berkeley County Government entered an agreement with Liberty Tire Recycling to begin the removal of tires at the former Viva Recycling plant on Monday, August 20, 2018.
Berkeley County Council approved Liberty Tire Recycling on June 25, 2018, following requirements of a formal solicitation.
The cleanup is being funded through $3.5 million in grants from S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
As the cleanup continues, Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling the area. The public is not allowed on the premises.
