Electronics recycling causes frustrations for county, residents

CLEARFIELD, Pa. (WTAJ)– The Clearfield County Solid Waste Authority is reminding residents why they cannot accept TVs, and asking for your help.

A state law passed in 2010 requires the manufacturers to provide free recycling programs for electronics.

In 2013, a law was passed banning electronics from landfills.

In Clearfield County, there aren’t any of these programs.

To remedy that, Clearfield County Solid Waste Authority holds an electronics collection twice a year.

The catch is it costs the resident 60 cents per pound to recycle a TV.

“We’ve actually had people come to our event with a pickup truck full of old tvs and once they weigh the material and see how much it’s going to cost them, they don’t have the money so they put it back on their truck,” director Jodi Brennan said.

Brennan said because it costs so much, people will store TVs at home or illegally dump them.

Another place that deals with unwanted TVs is Goodwill.

Goodwill Industries of North Central PA does not accept TVs of any kind, but they still get them.

“So we’re paying the truck driver of course, the donation attendants to take care of it, the truck driver to pick it up and bring it here, get it all wrapped up, put it on a truck, then we have to pay to get rid of it,” vice president of procurement/development Nick Suplizio said.

Clearfield County Solid Waste Authority is encouraging you to write to your state legislators to get manufacturers to provide more recycling programs.
