About 50 firefighters are battling a large, smoky mulch fire that was reported shortly before noon Thursday in Saticoy.
The fire, which was described as coming from a trash and mulch pile, started in the 1900 block of Lirio Avenue at a recycling center, said Capt. Stan Ziegler, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department. He described the pile as about half an acre in size and up to 50 feet tall in places.
The city of Ventura Fire Department also responded. Crews were using two ladder trucks, an aircraft crash rescue and a specialized unit called an aerial master stream to inundate the pile from above, Ziegler said.
“This is going to be a rather lengthy call that will last several hours,” he said.
He also said access was limited to the recycling center, making the firefight more difficult.
Ventura police said the smoke was hindering visibility in the area and could cause traffic delays. No injuries have been reported and the cause is being investigated, according to police and fire officials.
