LNP calls for shake up over ‘botched’ recycling scheme

THE Queensland LNP are calling for change over the State Government’s “botched” rollout of the Container Deposit Scheme, saying issues across the board meant many Sunshine Coast residents had no way of participating.

Shadow Environment Minister David Crisafulli said residents had been paying for the scheme’s “poor implementation” since the beginning, and said it was up to the government to take responsibility.

“Whether it’s poor parking, whether it’s bad conditions at sites, whether it’s bags not being present, it’s just been a tale of woe,” he said.

“If this is going to work and it’s going to deliver environmental outcomes, it’ll only happen … if there’s consistency across the board.

“The buck’s got to stop with somebody.”

While members of the public have blamed contractors like Envirobank, Mr Crisafully said at the end of the day it was the State Government’s responsibility to hold contractors to account.

“The providers have to provide a service, and the government needs to understand that the ultimate responsibility stops with them,” he said.

“This is a scheme we back, in fact we first called for it. We support it, we want to see it work.”

Maroochydore resident Ian Robertson said he had given up using recycling facilities after months of not being able to use them.

“I’ve been trying to recycle since day one, and there’s never been any bags, you can’t get bags anywhere,” he said.

“It’s just not working.

“I’ve lost interest in it because you can’t do the right thing, because they can’t supply the product.”

He said the scheme should have been managed better from the start.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said when the scheme kicked off, the Glass House electorate had four sites where people could drop off their recycling.

“Because of the abuse they’ve been copping, as owners of the property, three of those shut today. Which leaves us with one for the entire electorate,” Mr Powell said.

“My constituents, my kids, my family are trying to do the right thing. But they simply can’t when the service isn’t there for them.”

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the Liberal Party wanted to see the scheme run successfully, but the “holes” were unacceptable.

“People are so frustrated when they ring call centres and get flipped to Sydney, don’t get a return call … the bags keep running out, people get frustrated and they’re giving up on a scheme that we want to see succeed.

“It’s time that the Government took responsibility and made sure that these service providers perform, because the public wants to see it succeed.”
