Military personnel detonate live artillery shell found at recycling plant

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) – Military personnel took care of what could’ve been an explosive situation at a Rapid City recycling plant over the weekend.

Ellsworth Air Force Base’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal detonated a live 203-millimeter artillery shell on Sunday.

Officials from Ellsworth described it as a dangerous situation.

The disposal team took the shell from Ace Steel and Recycling, detonated it in a landfill, and it is no longer a threat.

Employees of the recycling business tell us they found the shell mixed with other scrap metal at the plant after someone driving a Wyoming vehicle dropped off the metals on Friday.

Rapid City Police received a call from the recycling plant on Sunday and called EOD to properly dispose of the shell.
