REPORTER: MY COMPOST BIN, FOOD SCRAPS AND EGG SHELLS, NO OTHER ANIMAL PRODUCTS IN HERE. BUT THIS IS ABOUT RECYCLING, META PLASTIC, PAPER AND GLASS. WHEN THIS IS ALL FINISHED, I CAN’T RECYCLE THIS? >> TWO WEEKS AGO IT WAS RECYCLABLE, NOW IT’S NOT. YOUR NOW CONTRACT SAYS THAT GLASS IS NO LONGER RECYCLABLE. REPORTER: EGG CARTON, RECYCLE, METAL CANS, ALUMINUM OR STEEL, RECYCLE. PLASTICS ARE TRICKY. SMALLER AT THE TOP, BIGGER AT THE BOTTOM, RECYCLE. BUT IN YOGURT CUP DOES NOT GO IN RECYCLING. >> THE TOP OF THAT IS WIDER THAN THE BOTTOM, I DON’T THINK YOU CAN BUY YOGURT ANY OTHER WAY, THAT’S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT’S INEVITABLE. >> HE HEADS UP THE PENNSYLVANIA RESOURCES COUNCIL AND GETS FUNDING TO HELP US ALL MANAGE RESOURCES. HE SAYS THROWING EVERYTHING IN ONE BIN TO RECYCLE OR SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING HAS ALWAYS BEEN PROBLEMATIC. >> SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING IS LIKE SCRAMBLING AN EGG. YOU’RE PUTTING IT IN THAT BIN AND SOMEBODY ELSE IS EXPECTED TO UNSCRAMBLE IT. IT’S A PLASTER PACK OR A PLASTIC, SO IT’S NOT RECYCLABLE AT ALL, THE PAPER IS. REPORTER: HE ENCOURAGES YOU TO KEEP TRYING, CALL THE P.R.K. OR YOUR MUNICIPALITY IF YOU’RE CONFUSED. BACK TO THE GARBAGE. THIS CAME IN CONTACT WITH FOOD. >> ANY PAPER THAT’S BEEN IN CONTACT WITH FOOD IS GENERALLY A NO-NO. SIX-PACK, NONRECYCLABLE. RECYCLABLE. THE GENERAL GUIDANCE IS IF THERE WAS FOOD IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE PLASTIC FILM, IT GOES IN THE TRASH. REPORTER: BOTH THE COKE BOTTLE AND RASPBERRY CONTAINER HAVE A NUMBER ONE RECYCLING CODE. BUT –% >> THIS IS RECYCLABLE, THIS IS NOT. REPORTER: ALL THOSE PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS CAN BE RECYCLED, BUT NOT IN YOUR HOLE BIN, THEY GO BACK TO THE STORE. CARDBOARD BOXES GET FLATTENED AND FOLDED AND ADDED TO THE BLUE BIN. STYROFOAM IS RECYCLABLE TOO, BUT NOT IN YOUR BLUE BIN. >> IT CAN GO TO AN APPLIANCE WAREHOUSE ON THE SOUTH SIDE, SIX DAYS A WEEK. REPORTER: I GET THESE IN THE MAIL EVERY DAY. >> SO PAPER, P.R.C. HAS BEEN ENCOURAGING FOLKS TO TAKE THEIR PAPERBACK TO THE PAPER RETRIEVER BINS AT YOUR CHURCH, COMMUNITY FIRE OR FIRE HALL. REPORTER: NOW EVERYBODY WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT GLASS. SOME COMMUNITIES STILL CAN PUT GLASS IN THE RECYCLING, SHEACOG CANNOT. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 Anchor Shannon Perrine explains changes

Do you recycle? Are you frustrated or confused by what’s allowed in the blue bin and what is not?

When the South Hills Area Council of Governments contracted with Waste Management to haul away recyclables, the rules changed about what could go in the bin. But many of the rules stayed the same, and it turns out that many of us have been recycling wrong for years.
