Williamsburg has started a new recycling contract with TFC and with the new five-year partnership comes some changes. The program starts July 1.

Williamsburg is one of four cities, Virginia Peninsula Public Service Authority, to maintain a recycling program and recently chose a different more expensive vendor paid for by the city, according to the city’s news release.

“Recycling is always the best first choice when it comes to handling waste disposal,” said Dan Clayton, the city’s public works director. “The city has been a leader in green initiatives and environmental stewardship, but recycling has become a challenge due to fluctuating markets.”

While the city will continue to charge a flat fee for recycling and garbage collections there are some changes to the recycling program. See more information on the program here.

Recyclables will be collected every other week on the same day as the trash collection. In addition, a new recycling cart will be administered.

Some general tips for collection are to recycle items labeled #1 or #2 such as water bottles and milk jugs and to place the recyclables inside the cart since items outside the cart will not be collected. Other recyclables like newspapers, cardboard and cans will still be collected.

Here’s the timeline leading up to the new recycling program:

  • June 15-25 – New recycling carts, gray with a tan lid, will be delivered to your home. Information about the new program will also be provided.
  • June 19-20 -Roll your old recycling cart to the curb to be picked up on 19th or 20th.
  • July 1 – Recycling program begins. Start using the new bins.
