Recycling centers in Antrim County are overflowing with litter.
Now the county has to figure out what to do with it all.
The Antrim Conservation District says it’s an issue they deal with every year.
After cleaning out their homes, many people dump oversized items at one of the eight recycling centers in the county.
Air conditioners, TVs and mattresses are some examples of items that either can’t be recycled or don’t fit into the bins.
The county pays extra for them to be removed.
They hope more people will learn how the recycling process works, and think twice before dumping items.
“The whole thing behind recycling is what you put in there is actually going to be made into something else. If you put the wrong thing in, it’s considered contamination and it makes it more difficult to produce the new item. TVs, computers, and lots of other things can be recycled, just not through this system,” explained Wendy Warren, Antrim Conservation District manager.
Anyone caught littering can be fined up to $500 or 90 days in jail.
