MARQUETTE — Recycling and garbage fees are being increased in the city of Marquette.

Earlier tonight, the Marquette City Commission approved a motion to pass on some of the costs of recycling and waste collection to consumers within the city.

“It makes sense, it’s fair,” said Marquette City Manager Mike Angeli. “It isn’t fair for the hauler to absorb that type of increase. It’ll be minimal when it’s spread out, probably around 22 cents per stop, or about $2.69 a year per resident.”

The move comes as a result of the Solid Waste Management Authority raising the tipping fee by $6 per ton in November of last year, in order to pay for new equipment.

The increase includes curbside residential pickup, as well as city facilities.

Also approved at the meeting is the purchase agreement for the Noquemanon Trail Network to acquire parcel #13 of the Heartwood Forestland for $96,000.
