HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — The Department of Public Works in Harrisonburg is trying to make recycling more convenient for residents by sending out its mobile recycling unit to different locations throughout the city in May.

A worker from the Department of Public Works will be at each location, to make sure plastics are sorted in the correct bin.

On Monday, the unit was at the Lucy Simms Center collecting glass bottles, cardboard, and number one and two plastics, such as water bottles, milk jugs, and shampoo bottles.

The department said they are no longer collecting plastics three through seven. Those items include food trays, toys and other hard plastics.

Harsit Patel, with the Harrisonburg Department of Public Works, said they have had great success with the unit during the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, and hope more people will participate.

“What we’d like to do is sort of reach out to the community areas, to try and see if we can get additional participation,” Patel said. “Or just make it easier to the individuals, who are currently having to drive across town, having to come to the convenience center or the farmers market just to recycle.”

The department asks for each bottle to be washed out before it is sorted.

Patel said if there has been great success this month with the program, and the department hopes to continue it indefinitely.
