MADISON COUNTY, Ala. – Recycling in the Huntsville/Madison County area is undergoing some big changes this summer.
On Friday, June 7, the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville (SWDA) announced their new curbside recycling collection program, Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA).
RANA is a free, opt-in program set to begin August 1 with monthly curbside recycling cart pick up. SWDA says the new automated program will be more efficient and user-friendly. The new carts will replace the current 18-gallon bins with larger 95-gallon rolling carts with lids.
New and easy way to get rid of household hazardous waste
The current bin service is scheduled to end Wednesday, July 31. Until then, regular weekly curbside service will continue as normal.
SWDA urges all eligible residents to sign up for the new RANA program by June 28 in order to receive a new cart and continue their free recycling service. If residents currently have their garbage picked up by the City of Huntsville or Madison County, they are eligible for the new program.
The first round of cart deliveries will begin in July and residents will be notified of their pick up date at that time. SWDA has also announced an additional 20,000 households in the area will now be eligible for the program. To see if you’re eligible, click here.
“We designed RANA to be an ever-evolving program to fit the recycling needs of our residents and continue to make the City of Huntsville, City of Madison and Madison County sustainable places to live,” said John R. “Doc” Holladay, Executive Director of SWDA. “Since residents must register for the new program, it is very important that all residents sign up either through our website or by calling in. We will work diligently to eliminate any potential interruption in the program.”
Items accepted will include #1 and #2 plastic bottles (where the neck is smaller than the bottom), aluminum, steel and bi-metal cans, mixed paper and cardboard. Used motor oil and batteries will no longer be accepted in the curbside program. Those items can be taken to the new Household Hazardous Waste facility in Huntsville.
